Performance at The Phoenix Exeter

AIM:

Successfully perform a DJ set for 6 hours as part of a duo with another DJ.

Objectives:

  • Play music suitable for the event

  • Keep the audience entertained and promote dancing

  • Communicate and work with the other group

  • utilize time management

  • help with the transport and safety of the equipment

I was asked by Simon Gregg to perform at the Phoenix club/performance space in Exeter as part of an event that was being held on the 7th of May 2011. He needed 2 DJ's in one particular room within the club. He also needed DJ equipment for the event which i supplied. The event started at 8pm and finished at 2pm.

Set times:

  • 8 - 9pm (DJ Gnome)

  • 9 - 10pm (Initial Technique)

  • 10 - 11 (DJ Gnome)

  • 11 - 12am (Initial Technique)

  • 12 - 2am (both/back to back)

Reflection

The night was a success. I met my aims and objectives easily. The music chosen entertained the audience and got them to dance. The other DJ (Initial Technique) and myself worked well together. We helped each other via using the microphone that was set up to keep the crowd entertained. We have planned future work together.

The time management could of been improved but it was acceptable. Instead of starting together (back to back) at 12am as planned, we ended up starting at around 12:30am leaving a half hour gap out of schedule. It was manageable.

The equipment was well looked after and caused no hazards. Generally the night was a success. I learned that travel needs to be sorted as soon as possible when planning to perform in the early hours of the next morning. I could potentially be stuck in an unfamiliar place if not planned as public transport is shut.

I managed to gain a new co worker (DJ) and a number off a local promoter which potentially could get me more work.

Ashburton Interactive location based interactive drama.

Aim: To voice act for an interactive drama considering the environment of the script and the character

Objectives: Successfully record high quality samples through voice acting considering the interpretation of the character within the script. I must perform an improvise character voices using the script as a guideline to style.

using this information i had to come up with an appropriate voice to record into a microphone connected to recording software.

Upon recording some of the other chosen voice actors had to do there parts later in the day. There was not a recording technician available so I offered to help as I know the program very well and have previously studied recording techniques. I stayed on more hours to fulfill this newly acquired task. I used had gestures and general communication with the other voice actors to get the best out of the recordings. Emma was very happy with the work and asked if I could do it every meeting. She also asked me to teach her the basics of Logic Pro so she could use the program to edit the recordings. I was very happy to do this task as i wish to music technology as a career in the future specifically teaching programs such as the latter. I was very happy to gain experiance within my main career goal.

Emma decided to right me some feedback via email:

'Justin worked as a voice actor, recording technician and Adobe Logic Pro instructor for the Ashburton Interactive location based interactive drama.

As a voice actor Justin participated in three recording sessions taking the part of Jeremiah Slatters, appearing in one scene.

Justin was happy to respond spontaneously to the script and grasped the tone and the nature of his character very quickly. Justin created an appropriate voice. He was able to maintain the voice and express emotions, in accordance with the script.

Justin was the main recording technician for one of the four recordings. He also contributed to the recordings during the other sessions. Justin brings an attention to detail and thoroughness to his work that ensured the recordings were successful.

Justin demonstrated his knowledge of Logic Pro when advising on the editing of the sound recordings. He clearly and patiently demonstrated the automate function and a number of features of Logic Pro 8.

Justin responded to correspondence and arrived promptly for sessions.

Justin’s acting ability, his knowledge of Logic Pro 8, his teaching ability and his professionalism made him a pleasure to work with.'
